The LeVeque Tower, a defining feature of Columbus’ skyline since its opening in 1927, is currently facing significant structural and maintenance challenges as it approaches its centennial. Originally the fifth-tallest building in the world, the tower now requires extensive restoration to address aging infrastructure and safety concerns, including falling debris. Temporary scaffolding has been erected around its base, impacting its visual appeal.
Architect Sam Rosenthal of Schooley Caldwell has been leading restoration efforts since 2011 under Tower 10 LLC, the investment group that owns the building. Despite a substantial $27 million renovation, persistent issues, particularly facade deterioration, remain unresolved. Rosenthal emphasizes the complexity of preserving this historic structure, noting that while the tower lacks modern design features for efficient maintenance, it continues to hold cultural and architectural significance for Columbus.
As the city prepares to celebrate the tower’s 100th anniversary, the community remains hopeful that solutions will be found to preserve this iconic landmark for future generations.
